Gas canister attacks target homes of New Democracy officials in Thessaloniki

Greek authorities have launched an investigation after a series of early morning gas canister attacks targeted the homes of three officials linked to the ruling New Democracy party in the northern city of Thessaloniki, local media reported.

The attacks took place between 4 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. in the Toumba and Pylaia districts.

The targets were identified as Zisis Ioakeimobits, president of the New Democracy steering committee in the Thessaloniki regional unit, former lawmaker Savvas Anastasiadis and New Democracy candidate Afroditi Nestora.

The explosive devices detonated outside the residences. According to local media, the attack on Nestora's home left five people injured, including Nestora and her mother, while three others suffered respiratory problems.

Police launched an investigation and began searching for those responsible.

Government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis condemned the attacks, saying the three officials had been targeted because of their political affiliation.

"These three officials are people who contribute selflessly to a political party, who believe in their ideas, and because they belong to a party and believe in those ideas, some criminals chose even to try to kill them," Marinakis told Skai radio.

He said police were working to identify and arrest those responsible for the attacks.
