ICE agent shoots man in New York
A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and wounded a man in New York City’s Marble Hill neighborhood on Thursday while a five-year-old child was inside the vehicle, city officials said.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said preliminary reports indicated that agents surrounded the man and the child before firing multiple rounds. The child was believed to be physically unharmed.
Mamdani condemned the incident as “unconscionable and incredibly serious” and said he planned to speak with US President Donald Trump to demand an end to ICE enforcement operations in the city.
“I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities,” the mayor said.
Homeland security alleges criminal links
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees ICE, said officers were conducting a targeted enforcement operation in the Bronx to arrest a man from the Dominican Republic who had a prior criminal conviction.
The department alleged that the man had associations with a gang and previous criminal convictions but did not identify him or provide evidence to support the claims.
According to DHS, the shooting occurred at around 4 pm local time (2000 GMT). The department said the officer discharged his weapon during the incident and that the wounded man received immediate medical assistance.
“The individual is alive and at a local hospital,” DHS said.
Federal enforcement under scrutiny
The shooting comes amid continued criticism of federal immigration enforcement practices, including the use of deadly force and allegations by authorities that individuals targeted in operations have gang affiliations.
The Trump administration has also repeatedly claimed that immigrants and protesters used vehicles as weapons, citing alleged vehicular attacks to explain instances in which federal agents opened fire.
The full circumstances surrounding Thursday’s shooting, including the extent of the man’s injuries, remained unclear.
