Belgian mosque targeted in anti-Islam attack
The Tawfieq Mosque in Belgium’s Schelle area was targeted in an anti-Islam attack by unidentified individuals ahead of Friday prayers.
According to local media reports, the incident took place on Sept. 4, shortly before Friday prayers. The Belgian Muslim Rights Monitoring Organization said hate messages and swastikas were drawn on the mosque’s doors and windows.
Mosque board files police complaint
The mosque’s board said it was deeply shocked by the incident. The attackers also left dog feces at the entrance to the mosque, according to the board.
The mosque administration filed a complaint with police, and an investigation into the incident is underway.
Group warns of anti-Muslim hatred
Mohamed Amin Chaib, head of the Belgian Muslim Rights Monitoring Organization, said the incident should not be dismissed as an isolated act of vandalism.
Chaib described the attack as a “disgusting and clear manifestation” of anti-Muslim hatred and called on local authorities to strengthen security measures at mosques.
The police investigation remains ongoing.
