PM eyes major cabinet shake-up

A sweeping government reshuffle appears imminent, with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis finalizing key appointments. Sources indicate that changes could occur within hours as the prime minister seeks to recalibrate his administration.
A significant shift is expected at the Finance Ministry, with potential candidates including Kyriakos Pierrakakis, Thodoros Skylakakis and Niki Kerameus. Additionally, a non-political appointee has emerged as a possible contender. Infrastructure remains another critical portfolio, with Thanos Plevris, a legal expert, reportedly in the mix due to his handling of the Tempe train disaster.
The anticipated transition of Kostis Hatzidakis to the role of deputy prime minister will be a major shakeup, altering the power dynamics within the administration. Historically, a finance minister change has been seen as the hallmark of a true government reshuffle, making this moment particularly significant.
Reports suggest two key proposals are under consideration to enhance governmental efficiency. The first involves establishing a “government committee” composed of senior political figures, including Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias and key cabinet members. This body would oversee major policy directives and provide strategic guidance.
A second proposal outlines “government circles,” where ministries with interconnected mandates would collaborate closely. These groupings would include an economic circle (Finance, Development, Labor), a state governance circle (Interior, Digital Governance, Infrastructure) and a public services circle (Education, Health, Family Affairs). A foreign affairs and defense cluster is also under review.
Mitsotakis has historically avoided large-scale reshuffles, making incremental adjustments following crises, such as the 2021 wildfires, the 2023 train disaster and the 2024 European Parliament election losses. However, this upcoming overhaul is expected to be broader than previous efforts, potentially marking a pivotal moment in his leadership.
