Personal identification number: The key date that will “lock” public service transactions

The countdown has begun for the implementation of Greece’s new Personal Identification Number (P.A.), which will become the primary tool for verifying identity in all public-sector transactions. Citizens have until November 5, 2025, to obtain their number, after which it will gradually replace both the Tax Identification Number (AFM) and the Social Security Number (AMKA).

The process is straightforward and can be completed digitally through the myinfo.gov.gr
platform using Taxisnet credentials. Alternatively, citizens can obtain their P.A. in person at Citizens’ Service Centers (KEP) or Consular Authorities abroad.

Officials warn that those who fail to activate their Personal Identification Number by the deadline may face delays and complications in key services, including tax filings, social insurance contributions, and access to electronic government services.

Step-by-Step: How to Obtain Your Personal Identification Number

The procedure is fully digital and simple:

  1. Log in to myinfo.gov.gr using Taxisnet credentials.
  2. Verify your personal details.
  3. Select “Issue Personal ID Number (P.A.)”.

The system automatically generates the number using the following structure:

  1. It consists of 12 alphanumeric characters, at least nine of which are digits.
  2. It includes three alphanumeric prefix characters followed by the individual’s nine-digit Tax ID (AFM).
  3. Only digits (0–9) and uppercase Greek letters with Latin equivalents are allowed.
  4. The third character serves as an automatic check digit ensuring the number’s validity.
  5. Confirm to complete the issuance process.

Why It Matters

Activating the Personal Identification Number is crucial to maintaining uninterrupted access to essential public services. Without it, citizens risk being unable to:

  1. Submit tax declarations
  2. Pay social security contributions
  3. Complete online government transactions

In short, by November 5, 2025, all citizens must have obtained their new Personal Identification Number to ensure smooth interactions with Greece’s digital and administrative systems.
