What to do if the personal number is missing on the new ID card

Greek authorities have issued an official clarification for citizens who have received the new national identity card but found that their Personal Number (Προσωπικός Αριθμός – PA) is not printed on it. Officials stated that this does not result in any loss of rights and that the Personal Number remains securely accessible through digital platforms.

Personal Number Accessible Digitally

Citizens whose new ID cards do not display the Personal Number can access it instantly via the Gov.gr Wallet application. After logging into the app and opening the digital identity document, the Personal Number is visible and can be used for all digital and administrative transactions. Authorities emphasized that the absence of the number on the physical card does not hinder any official procedures.

Option to Reissue the ID Card

Those who wish to have the Personal Number printed on their physical ID card may apply for a reissue. The process follows the standard ID issuance procedure, which includes booking an appointment, submitting the required documents and paying the applicable fees.

Documents Required for ID Issuance

Applications can be submitted in person at any authorized office, regardless of place of residence. The following are required:

Digital photograph: The photo can be taken at an authorized office or by a certified photographer and uploaded to the myPhoto system on gov.gr.

Application and declaration of responsibility: Provided and signed at the authorized office.

ID card application form: Citizenship details are automatically verified through the Ministry of Interior’s Civil Registry System.

Fees:

Standard ID card fee: 10 euros

For members of large families: 5 euros

Police stamp (EL.AS): 0.50 euros

All fees must be paid in advance through the e-Paravolo system.

Additional Information and Special Cases

Names and parents’ names on the ID card are written in Latin characters according to the EL.OT. 743 standard; alternative spellings require official documentation.

Blood group information may be added optionally.

In cases of permanent facial tattoos, a medical report is required.

Two fingerprints (index fingers of both hands) are collected electronically during the application.

If fingerprints cannot be temporarily obtained, the ID card’s validity is limited to 12 months instead of 10 years.

Additional documents may be required in special cases such as guardianship, trusteeship or military personnel.

Application Tracking

Each ID application is automatically assigned an Application Number, which citizens can use to track the status of their request. Upon completion, relevant information is also sent via email.
