Greece urges citizens to replace old ID cards before August 2026 deadline

Greek authorities are urging citizens to replace their old identity cards ahead of a key August 2026 deadline, as new European travel regulations come into force that will render existing IDs invalid for cross-border use.

Under the new framework, traditional “blue” Greek police ID cards will no longer be accepted as valid travel documents within the European Union after August 3, 2026. Citizens will instead need to obtain the new-generation ID card or use a passport for travel abroad.

New Rules Driven by Security Concerns
The transition is part of a broader effort to enhance document security across the EU. Existing Greek ID cards, which have been in circulation for decades, lack modern security features and are considered vulnerable to forgery and misuse.

Authorities are advising citizens to apply early to avoid last-minute congestion, as demand for the new IDs continues to rise.

Application Process and Costs
To obtain the new identity card, applicants must appear in person at a police station. A key requirement is a digital photograph, which can either be taken on-site or uploaded via a certified photographer through the myPhoto platform on gov.gr.

Applications are completed at the police station, with personal data automatically retrieved from state registries and verified by the applicant.

The standard issuance fee is €10, payable through the e-Paravolo system. A reduced fee of €5 applies to large families. Applicants are also required to purchase a small-value police stamp. All payments are processed digitally.

Upon completion of the process, the old ID card is surrendered and officially invalidated.

Delivery Time and Special Cases
New ID cards are produced at centralized facilities operated by the Hellenic Police, with an estimated delivery time of 5 to 7 working days.

For first-time applicants, a witness must be present to verify identity details. In the case of minors, this role can be fulfilled by a parent or legal guardian, provided all necessary documentation is submitted.

Once issued, the new ID details are automatically updated across interconnected public information systems, enabling smoother access to government services and digital platforms.

High Demand Causes Delays
Increased demand has already led to appointment shortages, particularly in major cities such as Athens and Selanik, where available slots are quickly booked.

Authorities recommend that citizens frequently check the booking platform for new appointments or consider visiting police stations in smaller cities.

In urgent cases—such as emergency travel, loss or theft of ID, or critical academic needs—applications may be processed without prior appointment, provided supporting documents are submitted.
