Approximately 150,000 vehicle owners who have declared their vehicles as being out of use can reclaim their license plates ahead of the Easter holidays and also pay road tax for a month instead of a full year, depending on when they’d like to have access to their car, according to a recent legal amendment.

The myCAR online platform has opened and allows users to lift the non-use status of their vehicles and pay a road tax proportional to the months they plan to drive them until the end of the year. For example, if a car owner who would normally pay €120 in yearly road tax decides to reinstate their vehicle for just one month – say, May or June – they will only pay €10 in taxes. However, this right can only be exercised once a year. In other words, owners cannot lift the non-use status now for one month and then do so again, say, in September. They must decide upfront how many months they plan to use their vehicle and pay accordingly.

The maximum period is from April to December.

Additionally, the new legislation  introduced by the Finance Ministry includes a provision for the automatic re-registration of vehicles as non-operational by the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE), to assist taxpayers who have paid proportional road taxes. Essentially, once the selected usage period ends, the vehicle will automatically be marked as inactive again. This measure was introduced because many owners forget to re-declare non-use, resulting in steep fines.
