Athens taxi drivers launch 48-hour strike over mandatory electrification.
No taxis in Athens today and tomorrow

Taxi services across the Athens metropolitan area were disrupted on Tuesday as drivers began a 48-hour strike, scheduled to continue through Wednesday, protesting the government’s plan to make electric vehicles mandatory for taxis from January 1, 2026.

The strike was called by the Athens Taxi Drivers’ Union (SATA), which said the policy is being imposed without sufficient charging infrastructure or meaningful financial support. The union warned that high electricity prices and the cost of electric vehicles would make the transition economically unviable for many drivers.

SATA said it does not oppose electrification in principle but rejects its compulsory implementation, adding that further industrial action will follow if the government fails to respond to the sector’s demands.
