Athens taxi drivers announce 48-hour strike on February 3–4

According to the union, drivers will gather at SATA headquarters on Tuesday morning before marching to the Prime Minister’s Office, protesting what they describe as the government’s hostile stance toward the sector.

SATA strongly opposes recent legislation linked to electric vehicle policies, accusing the Ministry of Transport of undermining the taxi industry. The union highlights a provision that reduces the minimum rental fee for chauffeur-driven private vehicles (E.I.X.) from €90 to €50 for zero-emission vehicles from January 1, 2027, effectively blurring the distinction between taxis and private hire services.

The union also questions the government’s claims regarding electric vehicle infrastructure, arguing that fast-charging facilities suitable for professional fleets remain extremely limited. SATA says the lack of adequate charging points, insurance coverage issues for batteries, and extended charging times make a mandatory transition to electric taxis unviable under current conditions.

In addition, taxi drivers cite rising operating costs, including fuel price increases of up to 30% since 2022, higher insurance premiums, and maintenance expenses, while accusing authorities of failing to address illegal competition from private hire platforms and excessive taxation.

SATA says only direct intervention by the Prime Minister can resolve the sector’s demands, which it describes as vital for the survival of taxi professionals.

The union apologized to the public for the disruption caused by the strike, stating that the action aims to defend safe, reliable, and publicly accountable transport services.
