New traffic code introduces urban speed reductions and stricter penalties

Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Vasilis Oikonomou, outlined the proposed changes in the upcoming New Traffic Code (KOK), soon to enter public consultation.

The revisions aim to enhance road safety through reduced speed limits, updated regulations for electric scooters and tougher penalties for violations.

A significant change is the reduction of speed limits in urban areas from 50 km/h to 30 km/h, with exceptions for major thoroughfares. This measure aims to address traffic accidents, particularly in cities, where half of Greece’s 621 road fatalities in 2023 occurred. Oikonomou described the situation as a “tragic phenomenon” requiring urgent action.

Harsher penalties will be introduced for violations like illegal use of emergency lanes (LEA) and parking on accessibility ramps for people with disabilities. Repeat offenders face escalating sanctions, including license suspension. Enforcement will also modernize with the introduction of digital ticketing, notifying violators via SMS and reducing bureaucratic delays.

The new code also includes specific rules for electric scooters, such as a minimum age requirement of 15 years, a speed limit of 25 km/h and mandatory helmet use. These measures aim to enhance the safety of users and minimize accidents.

The updated traffic code seeks to bring Greece closer to European road safety standards, reduce urban fatalities and promote safer mobility for all.
