New SYRIZA leader Kaselakis to enlist
According to the news published in the Greek press citing unnamed sources, Stefanos Kaselakis will apply for the November term to do his military service.
Kaselakis, who has been living abroad for years, is expected to do 20 days of military service by taking advantage of the opportunity granted to Greek citizens in the diaspora and complete the rest of the 6-month period free of charge.
The compulsory military service period in Greece is 12 months, except for special conditions. For those who reside abroad permanently, this period is 6 months.
20 DAYS OF MILITARY SERVICE AND PAY FOR THE REST
Kaselakis, as a member of the diaspora over the age of 35, has the right to serve 20 days of the 6-month period in the armed forces, and the rest for 810 euros per month.
Kaselakis, who came first in Sunday's second round of presidential elections, became the new leader of SYRIZA and the main opposition.
Kaselakis was awarded a scholarship to study in the USA at the age of 14 due to his outstanding achievements in maths and returned this year to settle in Greece for good.
