New legal regulations for identity cards coming! Ministry takes action after penalty

Following investigations by the Personal Data Protection Authority (DPA) and a subsequent penalty, new legal regulations are being prepared to strengthen the protection of citizens' personal data.

The DPA's self-assessment investigation revealed deficiencies in how citizens' personal data was processed and communicated. As a result, the ministry faced penalties, prompting the Ministry of Citizens' Protection and the Hellenic Police to quickly begin necessary changes in line with the decisions of independent regulatory bodies.

In a statement, the ministry announced plans to renew the legal framework to improve data protection processes and better secure citizens' rights. The ministry will place greater emphasis on the principle of minimal data collection, ensuring that only necessary data is retained. Additionally, informational materials on the Hellenic Police website will be updated to provide more transparent information to citizens.

These regulations are expected to be completed within six months. The ministry emphasized that the validity of existing identity cards will not be affected, allowing citizens to continue using their ID cards without concern, and assured that the process for issuing identity cards would proceed smoothly until the new regulations are finalized.

The new regulations are seen as a significant step toward enhancing personal data protection and improving services for citizens.
