New Left criticizes government over Eastern Mediterranean policy

Greece’s New Left party has accused the Mitsotakis government of engaging in “dangerous games” in the Eastern Mediterranean, following a trilateral meeting between Greece, Cyprus and Israel in Jerusalem.

In a statement, the party said the summit sends a message of escalation and confrontation rather than stability, peace and respect for international law. It argued that the trilateral format is being transformed into a framework with military characteristics, particularly through cooperation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is under scrutiny by the International Criminal Court.

The New Left said the government’s rhetoric and actions ignore the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, bypass international law and align Greece with policies that further militarize the region. It also criticized what it described as a contradiction between Athens’ participation in military partnerships and its parallel declarations in favor of broader multilateral dialogue initiatives.

According to the party, this diplomatic inconsistency undermines Greek and Cypriot interests, risks negative repercussions for the Cyprus issue and deepens regional tensions instead of easing them.

The New Left called for a coherent, peaceful and multidimensional foreign policy, firmly grounded in international law, human rights and active efforts to end ongoing conflicts, rather than involvement in what it described as dangerous geopolitical power rivalries.
