New Greek Poll shakes political landscape: New Democracy leads as battle for second place intensifies
A new public opinion poll in Greece has revealed significant shifts in the country’s political landscape, with the ruling New Democracy party maintaining a strong lead while competition for second place grows increasingly tight.
The survey, conducted for Political newspaper, asked voters which party they would support if national elections were held next Sunday.
According to the results, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s New Democracy secured 26.8% of voter support, remaining comfortably ahead of its rivals.
The poll showed a political formation associated with Alexis Tsipras reaching 13.7%, narrowly ahead of PASOK, which stood at 13.2%. The figures indicate an increasingly competitive race for the position of main opposition force.
Other parties measured in the survey included:
Communist Party of Greece – 5.2%
Greek Solution – 5.1%
Course of Freedom – 4.9%
The poll also reported that a political party linked to Maria Karystianou received 7.8% support.
Undecided voters accounted for 10.5% of respondents, highlighting continued volatility within the Greek electorate.
New Democracy Surpasses Key 30% Threshold in Vote Projection
In the poll’s projected vote estimate — calculated after distributing undecided voters — New Democracy rose to 30.1%, surpassing the symbolic 30% threshold viewed by analysts as politically significant.
Under the same projection:
The political bloc associated with Alexis Tsipras reached 15.1%
PASOK stood at 14.9%
Mitsotakis Remains the Most Trusted Leader
Respondents were also asked which political leader they trust most to govern the country.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis ranked first with 31% support. The second most common answer was “none” at 16.9%, reflecting broader public skepticism toward the political class.
Alexis Tsipras followed with 15.1%, while PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis received 10.7%.
Debate Over Early Elections Continues
The survey further highlighted growing debate over the possibility of early elections in Greece.
While 50% of participants believe the government will complete its full term, 45.4% said they consider the prospect of snap elections increasingly likely.
Cost of Living Emerges as Top Concern
The poll identified the rising cost of living as the most pressing issue facing Greek citizens.
Among the measures respondents favored:
- 26% supported reducing VAT and special consumption taxes
- 17.2% called for lower income taxes
- 17.1% demanded stricter market inspections and price controls
Other popular proposals included reducing or abolishing the ENFIA property tax, introducing price caps on essential goods, and expanding social welfare support.
