New Greek Highway code: Odd rules now carry fines – From flip-flops to hanging clothes

The enforcement of Greece’s new Highway Code (ΚΟΚ) has entered full swing, bringing strict fines even for driving habits that many considered harmless. Although most of these rules are not new, until now they were rarely enforced—leaving many drivers unaware of their obligations.

The lesser-known bans that now mean fines:

Shopping bags on the back seat
Loose objects inside the cabin are banned. A sudden brake can turn a bag or box into a hazard, even jamming under the brake pedal. All items must be stored in the trunk.

Driving with heavy jackets
Though it may seem trivial, thick clothing restricts a driver’s movement and slows reaction time, making it prohibited behind the wheel.

Hanging clothes and window sunshades
Anything that limits visibility, such as clothes on hangers or sunshades, is forbidden.

Hoodies and flip-flops
Drivers wearing a hood or flip-flops now risk a fine, as these reduce control over the steering wheel and pedals.

Coffee in hand = violation
Holding a coffee while driving is now considered a breach. One hand is taken off the wheel, and spills can distract the driver.

Phone suction mounts on windshields
Even if not in use, phones fixed with a suction cup on the windshield are banned, as they obstruct the driver’s field of vision.

Revving engines and honking
Unnecessary horn use and engine revving at traffic lights are penalized, as part of efforts to curb noise pollution and road aggression.

With stricter traffic policing, even these “small details” can now result in fines. Authorities stress that there is no longer room for overlooking minor violations.
