Mitsotakis says election timing remains undecided between March and May

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has said he has not yet decided whether the country’s next general election will be held in March or May, leaving the timing of the 2027 vote open for now.

Mitsotakis addressed the issue ahead of the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair, where he met with journalists and discussed the country’s political and economic agenda.

Asked about the timing of the next election, the prime minister said he had not yet made a decision between March and May.

He also indicated that parliamentary candidate lists would be finalized shortly before the election.

Mitsotakis defends government’s economic program
Mitsotakis said the economic and social measures he is expected to announce at the Thessaloniki International Fair have been fully costed.

“The program has been calculated down to the last euro,” the prime minister said, arguing that the government is maintaining fiscal discipline and is not spending more than the state can afford.

He also highlighted Greece’s improved access to financing, pointing to lower borrowing costs as an important sign of increased economic confidence.

According to Mitsotakis, Greece’s borrowing costs have fallen below those of some G7 countries, which he presented as evidence of the country’s improved financial position.

2027 election debate gains momentum
The prime minister’s comments come as speculation over the timing of the next general election, expected to take place in 2027, is beginning to intensify.

The economic and social support package to be presented during Mitsotakis’ Thessaloniki speech is expected to provide further indications of the government’s priorities ahead of the election.

Mitsotakis is scheduled to deliver his main Thessaloniki International Fair address on Saturday evening, September 5.
