Mitsotakis emphasizes importance of stability in Türkiye-Greece relations
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis highlighted the importance of maintaining stability in Turkey-Greece relations, noting that such stability would benefit both nations' peoples. Speaking at a press conference following the EU informal summit in Budapest, he responded to questions about Greek-Turkish relations and referenced his informal meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Mitsotakis expressed that "normalization" should be the primary goal for both countries.
Mitsotakis also mentioned the recent meeting in Athens between Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, acknowledging the positive atmosphere but noting that core issues remain unresolved. He reiterated that a stable environment in bilateral relations is essential for the welfare of both nations.
Additionally, Mitsotakis touched on the implications of Donald Trump’s potential return as U.S. president, stressing that Europe, including Greece, would need to take on more responsibility in relations with the U.S. He emphasized that the strong strategic partnership between Greece and the U.S., bolstered by a five-year defense agreement, continues to provide a secure foundation for future cooperation.
