Mitsotakis dismisses early election, cabinet reshuffle scenarios

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis moved to rule out scenarios of early elections or a cabinet reshuffle during an interview broadcast late on Action 24, saying his government remains focused on implementing reforms ahead of the 2027 national elections.

Speaking to journalist Athinaida Nega, Mitsotakis said there is “a full year ahead” before the country enters a pre-election period and stressed that his priority is delivering key reforms planned for 2026. “I am not thinking from now about the elections of 2027,” he said, reiterating his aim of securing a third term in office.

The prime minister also rejected speculation about changes to the government lineup, stating that a reshuffle is “not among my intentions,” adding that the current administration has not yet completed a year in office. His remarks came amid renewed media speculation about possible cabinet changes early in the new year and growing political chatter about elections in 2026.

Beyond his comments on the agricultural sector, which have drawn criticism for their divisive tone, Mitsotakis defended his government’s record and offered a positive assessment of its performance over the past year. He cited tax relief measures, a reduction in fatal road accidents and the removal of so-called “eternal students” from university rolls among the government’s achievements.

He also referred to a package of measures set to take effect from Jan. 1, saying they are aimed at boosting disposable income. “I think we are on a good path to delivering our core commitments,” he said.

Looking ahead to the Thessaloniki International Fair (DETH) in 2026, Mitsotakis promised “significant but measured” policy announcements, while underlining that fiscal discipline would not be compromised. “Needs are always endless and resources are finite, but we will not blow up the budget,” he said, stressing that any new measures would remain within strict fiscal limits.

Although not specifically asked about foreign policy beyond concerns over the risk of war, the prime minister said he does not fear such a scenario but again defended Greece’s extensive defense procurement programs. “No one else can guarantee our security,” he said, adding that while there is no reason for panic, the country must always be prepared to manage crises. He said this justified continued investment in the armed forces, new defense systems and personnel.

Mitsotakis also defended his strategy of broadening the New Democracy party, arguing that election results had validated that approach. He declined to comment on speculation about the creation of new political parties by Maria Karystianou or former prime minister Alexis Tsipras, saying it was “strange to measure expectations without knowing the policy positions of those involved.”
