An international academic conference focusing on crisis governance, disaster management, and resilience has opened in Kavala, bringing together more than 400 participants from 16 countries.

The event, titled “International Conference on Crisis Governance, Disaster Planning and Resilience: Risk Management and Security in International Postgraduate Education,” is co-organized by the Democritus University of Thrace and York University.

Global Participation on Risk and Security
Running from May 6 to May 9, 2026, the hybrid conference brings together academics, researchers, policymakers, public administration officials, practitioners, and postgraduate students.

Discussions focus on disaster risk management, security, civil protection, resilience strategies, cybersecurity, critical infrastructure protection, and responses to public health crises and hybrid threats.

Official Opening in Kavala
The official opening ceremony takes place on Wednesday, May 6 at 18:00 at the Kavala campus of Democritus University of Thrace. Organizers highlight the event as a platform for strengthening international cooperation in crisis preparedness and resilience-building.

Open Workshops on Key Challenges
On Friday, May 8, the conference will host three public workshops in Greek, addressing timely and socially relevant topics:

  • Climate risks and governance in Greece, with an emphasis on coordination as a foundation for resilience
  • Municipal networks in civil protection, focusing on the role of inter-city cooperation systems
  • Workplace violence and harassment and their broader impact on individuals, businesses, and society

A Growing Field of Global Cooperation
Experts note that the increasing frequency of climate-related disasters, technological risks, and complex security challenges has elevated crisis governance into a central field of international academic and policy cooperation.

The Kavala conference reflects this trend, positioning Greece as a regional hub for dialogue on resilience and emergency preparedness.
