Heavy rain, storms forecast across Greece; Six regions on Red Alert
Heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast across large parts of Greece on Monday, the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) said, issuing an emergency weather warning as severe conditions intensify.
According to EMY, strong rainfall and storms are expected in western Greece until midday, eastern and central Macedonia from the morning, parts of Thrace, Attica until noon, Crete, and the eastern Aegean islands and the Dodecanese from the afternoon. Gale-force southerly winds are also forecast in the Aegean Sea.
Six regional units — Serres, Drama, Kavala, Thassos, Xanthi and Rodopi — have been placed under a “Red Code” state of readiness due to the heightened risk of severe weather, the Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Ministry said.
Local authorities have been instructed to activate emergency coordination mechanisms and remain on high alert, particularly for potential flooding. Civil Protection authorities urged citizens to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel and follow official guidance.
Civil Protection authorities advised residents in affected areas to take precautionary measures, including securing loose objects, ensuring drains and gutters are clear, and avoiding crossings of streams and flooded roads during and after storms.
Citizens were also urged to avoid outdoor work, coastal and marine activities during severe weather, seek shelter immediately during hailstorms, and stay away from large trees, signs and areas where objects could fall. Authorities stressed the importance of following instructions from local officials and traffic police.
The public was advised to stay informed through official updates from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service and Civil Protection agencies.
