Heatwave peaks today with 40°C – Cooler weather from Saturday
Temperatures in Greece are expected to reach 39 to 40 degrees Celsius in several regions today, according to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS).
Weather Forecast for Friday, August 22
Eastern & southern mainland: 37-39°C, locally up to 40°C
Western & northern Greece, Crete & eastern Aegean islands: 34-36°C
Other island regions: 30-32°C
In western and northern areas, clouds with showers and thunderstorms are expected, mainly over the northern Ionian (Corfu, Paxoi, Diapontia islands) and coastal Epirus. Local showers may also occur in mainland areas during the afternoon. The rest of the country will see mostly clear skies.
During the evening, fog patches may develop in the west. Winds will blow south-southwesterly at 3-5 Beaufort in the Ionian, northern mainland and northern Aegean, and westerly at 4-6 Beaufort elsewhere.
Forecast for Saturday, August 23
The weather will be generally clear, with some clouds developing in central and northern mainland areas during midday and afternoon hours. Local showers are likely in Macedonia.
In the morning, reduced visibility and fog are expected in western regions.
Winds will shift to northwesterly at 3-5 Beaufort, locally up to 6 Beaufort in the Aegean.
Temperatures will drop:
32-34°C in western and northern mainland
35-37°C in the rest of the mainland
Up to 35°C in eastern Aegean islands & Crete
29-31°C in the remaining island regions
