Greek opposition slams use of Patriot Systems amid US–Israel–Iran conflict

Greece’s opposition parties have strongly criticized the government following reports that Greek-operated Patriot missile systems were used in connection with the escalating US–Israel–Iran conflict, raising concerns that the country may be becoming militarily entangled in the crisis.

The controversy intensified after Defense Minister Nikos Dendias confirmed that Greek missile systems deployed abroad had been involved in recent operations. The statement sparked immediate backlash in parliament and fueled public debate over Greece’s role in the regional conflict.

PASOK and SYRIZA Demand Clarification
Senior opposition figures from PASOK and SYRIZA questioned whether the government had effectively committed Greece to the conflict.

PASOK representative Pavlos Geroulanos criticized Dendias’ remarks, particularly his assertion that Greece’s alliances help safeguard citizens’ living standards. “With these statements, the minister is indirectly but clearly placing Greece into a war. Was this intentional or accidental?” Geroulanos asked.

SYRIZA MP Nikos Pappas argued that the Patriot systems in question are not merely exported assets but are actively operated by the Greek Armed Forces. He further accused Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of failing to uphold his pledge that Greece would not become involved in the conflict.

Left-Wing Parties Warn of Escalation
Criticism also came from Communist Party of Greece and the New Left party.

KKE MP Manolis Syntychakis accused the government of “playing with fire,” claiming it risks dragging Greece into a broader conflict in service of NATO and Israeli strategic interests.

Meanwhile, New Left leader Alexis Haritsis questioned the rationale behind deploying Patriot systems to protect Saudi Arabia, calling it unjustifiable. “There is no reason for our country to defend one of the world’s most rigid theocratic regimes,” he said in parliament.

Growing Pressure on Government
The opposition has uniformly rejected any military involvement of Greece in the Iran-related conflict and is demanding full transparency from the government regarding the scope and nature of its engagement.

The issue adds to mounting political pressure on Athens as tensions in the Middle East continue to rise, with analysts warning that even indirect military participation could carry significant geopolitical and domestic consequences.
