Greece sees continued decline in mortality rates through September
The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) reported a decline in deaths from all causes across Greece during the first nine months of 2024, attributed in part to fewer COVID-19-related fatalities. From January 1 to October 6, a total of 97,197 deaths were recorded nationwide, marking a reduction of 1,571 compared to the same period in 2023—a decrease of approximately 1.6%.
There were more weeks with declining mortality rates (25 weeks) than weeks with increases (15 weeks), with the largest decreases observed during the 7th, 9th, and 8th weeks of the year. Mortality declined most significantly in age groups 80-84, 85-89, and 75-79, while increases were primarily observed among those aged over 90, 65-69, and 55-59.
Regionally, the largest reductions in death rates were recorded in Attica, Thessaly, and the Peloponnese. Conversely, the most substantial increases were reported in Eastern Macedonia & Thrace, the Northern Aegean, and the Ionian Islands.
