The government of Greece has announced a new set of measures aimed at tackling rising prices and preventing profiteering in essential goods.

During a joint announcement, Vice President Kostis Hatzidakis, along with Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou and Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos, presented the government’s plan to impose a profit margin cap on a wide range of consumer products and fuels.

The measure will be implemented through a legislative act to be published in the Government Gazette and will remain in force until June 30, 2026.

Strict Controls and Heavy Fines
The regulation applies to the entire supply chain, including industry, supermarkets, fuel trading companies, and fuel stations.

Authorities also announced intensified inspections to ensure compliance with the rules. Companies found violating the price cap could face fines of up to €5 million.

List of Products Under Profit Margin Cap
The price control measure covers 61 essential consumer goods, including food products, household supplies, hygiene products, and baby care items.

Key food products include:

Rice
Bread (toast bread and loaf bread)
Rusks
Spaghetti-type pasta
All-purpose flour
Legumes (lentils, beans, chickpeas)
Processed meats (pariza, turkey cold cuts)
Fresh and frozen fish
Fresh pork, chicken, beef, lamb, and goat meat
Ready-made meals sold in supermarkets

Dairy and related products:

Fresh whole milk
Low-fat fresh milk
Long-life milk (whole and low-fat)
Evaporated milk
Plain yogurt and low-fat yogurt
Feta cheese
White cheese and gouda cheese
Low-fat cheese

Other staple foods:

Tomato juice
Eggs
Margarine and butter
Olive oil and sunflower oil
Frozen vegetables
White sugar
Sweeteners suitable for diabetics (e.g., stevia)
Breakfast cereals
Coffee (all types including Greek, espresso capsules, instant, and filter coffee)
Chocolate products and biscuits
Orange juice

Household and personal care products:

Laundry detergents (liquid and powder)
Surface cleaners and bleach
Dishwashing liquids
Kitchen paper towels
Toilet paper
Toothpaste
Razors and razor cartridges
Shampoo and soaps (solid and liquid)
Shower gels

Baby and hygiene products:

Infant formula and baby cereals
Baby diapers and baby wipes
Baby shampoo

Government’s Goal

The government stated that the initiative aims to protect consumers from excessive price increases and ensure fair pricing in essential goods during a period of ongoing cost-of-living pressures.

Officials stressed that the measures are temporary but necessary to stabilize the market and prevent unjustified profit margins in critical sectors.
