Greece braces for intense heatwave through Wednesday
Greece is experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures expected to soar above 40°C in many inland areas through Wednesday, according to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service. The scorching conditions are forecast to ease by Thursday, offering some relief after days of extreme heat.
In the mainland interior, temperatures on Monday reached between 38°C and 40°C, with peaks as high as 41°C in eastern regions. Coastal areas remained slightly cooler, with temperatures 2–4°C lower than inland and humidity levels dropping to as low as 20–30% during midday.
Urban centers are also expected to remain uncomfortably warm during the night, with minimum temperatures ranging from 27°C to 29°C on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
On Tuesday, a minor temperature decrease is forecast for the Ionian islands and western parts of the mainland, while the eastern mainland and Aegean islands may see a slight increase. Peak temperatures could rise to 42°C in the east, while the west may experience highs around 38–39°C. The Ionian islands are expected to see temperatures between 34°C and 36°C.
By Wednesday, the extreme heat will persist in the east, with temperatures again reaching up to 42°C, while western regions are expected to cool further. Eastern Aegean islands, the Dodecanese, and parts of Crete will continue to see highs of 37–38°C.
Authorities are urging residents and tourists to take precautions, avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak heat hours, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable individuals.
The Civil Protection Service remains on alert and has advised local municipalities to implement emergency measures to help the public cope with the high temperatures.
