George Papandreou at the Munich Security Conference

Former Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou participated in the Munich Security Conference (MSC) today, attending the final day of the event in his capacity as General Rapporteur for Democracy at the Council of Europe.
During the conference, Papandreou held meetings with world leaders, representatives of international organizations, think tanks, tech industry executives, and global civil society figures. These discussions took place at a particularly critical geopolitical moment, especially in light of Donald Trump’s return to the U.S. presidency.
Intervention on Transatlantic Energy Security
Yesterday, Papandreou spoke at a panel on transatlantic energy security in times of crisis, organized by the Atlantic Council in collaboration with the BMW Foundation. He emphasized the need for constant vigilance in addressing complex global crises, such as:
- Climate change
- Ongoing armed conflicts
- Rising economic inequalities
"We must address these challenges collectively through institutional multilateral cooperation, while also strengthening democratic institutions and citizen participation through innovative, participatory methods," he stated.
He further stressed that Europe must play a decisive role in safeguarding democratic values, peaceful coexistence, the rule of law, inclusivity, and prosperity—not just for the powerful few, but for all citizens.
