A 53-year-old French man was killed and his wife was critically injured in a road accident on Thursday in the Chania area of Crete, where the couple were on holiday.

The rented car the man was driving was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle at the exit of the village Vrysses, in Apokoronas.

The speed of the collision was such that the Fire Brigade had to be called in to extricate the man's body from the rented vehicle he was driving. The man was unconscious when picked up by an ambulance and taken to hospital, while his wife was seriously injured and has been admitted to the Resuscitation Unit in Chania Hospital, where her condition is considered critical. The Greek driver of the second vehicle involved in the collision is being treated for light injuries at the same hospital.

According to sources, the collision was caused because one of the two vehicles had entered the opposite lane. An inquiry is being carried out by the Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK) traffic police.
