Fresh attack on Riyadh airport kills one, injures 11
One person was killed and 11 others injured in an attack on King Khalid International Airport in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, early Monday, Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority said.
The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) said the deceased was a Pakistani resident, while the injured were taken to hospital for treatment. The attack also caused material damage, which authorities were still assessing.
The latest strike came a day after a separate attack on the same airport killed 12 people and injured 309, according to the aviation authority.
The victims of Saturday’s attack included four Saudi nationals, two Bangladeshis and one citizen each from the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Sudan. Some of the injured were reported to be in critical condition.
Airport operations disrupted after repeated strikes
The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen said an unidentified projectile struck Terminal 4 at King Khalid International Airport on Sunday afternoon, triggering a fire.
Following Saturday’s attack, airport operations were temporarily suspended as authorities assessed the damage and checked the safety of airport facilities.
The disruption affected flights, with passengers advised to contact their airlines before travelling to the airport. Kuwait Airways also cancelled its Saturday services to Riyadh and return flights, citing the airport’s closure.
Saudi coalition vows response
The latest attacks come amid heightened regional tensions following a series of missile and drone strikes targeting Saudi airports and facilities in recent days.
The Saudi-led coalition blamed Yemen’s Houthi group for Saturday’s deadly attack and vowed a firm response, describing the strike as a violation of international humanitarian law.
Authorities have continued assessing the damage and dealing with the aftermath of the repeated attacks on the airport.
