Flu claims eight lives in one week as hospital pressure mounts in Greece

Local media report a noticeable surge in emergency room admissions, particularly in major hospitals, as the flu outbreak intensifies nationwide.

Hospitals Under Heavy Strain

In Athens, the Agia Sofia Children’s Hospital examined more than 160 children within just a few hours, highlighting the scale of pediatric cases. Meanwhile, over 250 patients sought treatment at Laiko Hospital, and more than 100 patients were admitted to Sotiria Hospital, primarily with respiratory infections and flu-related symptoms.

Official Figures from Public Health Authority

The National Public Health Organization (EODY) stated that while most healthy individuals recover from the flu with mild symptoms, high-risk groups are more vulnerable to severe complications.

According to EODY data for the past week:

  • 8 deaths were attributed to influenza
  • Over 870 patients were hospitalized
  • 15 patients required treatment in intensive care units

Vaccination Urged for High-Risk Groups

Health officials have renewed calls for flu vaccination, especially for individuals in risk groups, stressing that vaccination significantly reduces the likelihood of severe illness, hospitalization, and death.

Authorities also advise citizens to seek medical attention promptly if symptoms worsen and to follow basic preventive measures to limit the spread of the virus.
