Death rates double birth rates in Greece
According to data from the Greek Ministry of the Interior, 125,423 deaths and 62,624 births were recorded in the country in 2024.
Viron Kocamanis, President of the Department of Demography and Population Research Institute at the University of Thessaly, emphasized that the gap between birth and death rates exceeds twofold and is a key indicator of the country’s demographic challenges.
Kocamanis stressed that the decline in birth rates is not solely due to an aging population. He pointed out that economic uncertainty, low income levels, and insufficient family support policies also negatively impact young couples’ decisions to have children.
Experts noted that Greece’s birth rate remains below the European average and that the country’s population is on a long-term shrinking trend.
