Farmers roll out their tractors across Greece to protest against rising production costs
Farmers started rolling out their tractors in different parts of the mainland on Thursday, to protest against rising production costs and inadequate infrastructure.
Near the city of Karditsa in northern Greece, tensions flared between the farmers and the police, who blocked them from closing the E-65 highway. Farmers reportedly declared their intention to attempt closing the road again in the coming days.
Last week, the Panhellenic Committee of Farmers at Blockades issued a statement, saying that “the critical issues that concern us not only remain unresolved, but we are witnessing an acceleration of policies that are driving us out of production, leading to the desertification of the countryside.”
The statement demanded from the government to address the high cost of production, to provide protection from natural disasters, as well as to change ELGA (Hellenic Organization of Agricultural Insurances) regulations.
