Farmers rally at Syntagma Square, joined by federations and unions from several sectors
Farmers from all over Greece converged for a rally at Syntagma Square on Tuesday evening, to protest high production prices and call for more support from the government.
Vassilissis Sofias Avenue in front of the parliament building is full of tractors and farmers' vans. Rallying farmers have been joined by federations, associations, and unions from several sectors to support them.
The federation of public sector employees (ADEDY) had earlier called on its members to show up in support.
Struggle will continue if issues not resolved, head of Karditsa farmers says
If no resolution is provided to the problems of the agricultural sector, the fight will continue, said Kostas Tzelas, head of the Unifying Federation of Karditsa Agricultural Unions during his address at the farmers' rally.
He reiterated their demands include untaxed agricultural fuel, cheap agricultural power, fighting imports being dubbed 'Greek', and the revision of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
Farmers' demands include subsidies for purchase of fertilizer, animal feed, and equipment. "Through these, we shall be able to produce cheap agricultural products," Tzelas underlined.
"Every time there is a revision of CAP, we become cheaper. We are abandoning our villages and farms," he added.
