Fan clash turns deadly on Eğriboz Island: 23-year-old killed, 5 arrested
A violent confrontation between rival fan groups on Evia Island (Eğriboz) turned deadly on Monday night, leaving a 23-year-old man fatally stabbed and another 20-year-old injured. Police have detained five individuals, while two others remain at large.
The first incident occurred in the evening on Lilandion Street, where an argument between two groups of young men quickly escalated into a fight. The 23-year-old victim sustained multiple stab wounds and was taken to the Evia State Hospital by unidentified individuals in a private vehicle. Despite doctors’ efforts, he could not be saved.
According to initial police findings, the attack stemmed from an ongoing rivalry between fan groups.
Police spokesperson Konstantina Dimoglidou told SKAI TV, “Based on current information, eight people were involved in the incident — two groups of four. Five have been arrested, and two are still being sought.”
An eyewitness described the scene to local media:
“I’m in shock. A few people brought a stabbed young man to the hospital and then fled. They stabbed a 23-year-old kid… for nothing. Over fan rivalry? He died before our eyes. A mother and father are crying today. We must wake up before we lose our humanity.”
A few hours later, a second stabbing took place near Eleftherias Square. A 20-year-old man was found with facial stab wounds and fractures to his body. He was taken under police escort to Eğriboz Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
The Eğriboz Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Unit is examining whether the two incidents are connected. Meanwhile, security has been tightened across the city, with increased police patrols to prevent further clashes.
