European Public Prosecutor summons 13 New Democracy MPs in OPEKEPE subsidy probe

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office has summoned 13 lawmakers from New Democracy to provide statements as suspects in an ongoing investigation linked to agricultural subsidy payments managed by OPEKEPE, Greece’s agricultural payments and control agency.

According to reports, the MPs have been instructed to submit their explanations to European prosecutors by May 21. Notifications have already been delivered, while several lawmakers are expected to present written defenses rather than appear in person.

Investigation Focuses on EU Agricultural Subsidies
The investigation centers on allegations involving the management and distribution of European Union agricultural funds through OPEKEPE.

Earlier, the Hellenic Parliament voted to lift the parliamentary immunity of the 13 lawmakers named in the case, allowing prosecutors to proceed with the inquiry.

In addition to the MPs, current and former agency officials and employees are also reportedly under investigation as part of the broader probe.

Allegations Include Fraud and Abuse of Office
The case involves accusations that could potentially harm the financial interests of the European Union, including allegations of abuse of office, fraud, and false declarations connected to subsidy procedures.

At this stage, no formal criminal charges have been filed against any of the lawmakers. European prosecutors are expected to determine whether indictments will follow after reviewing the submitted testimonies and evidence.

Claims of Documentation Errors
Meanwhile, some defense lawyers argued that official documents sent to several MPs contained inaccuracies regarding financial amounts cited in the case.

According to reports, the relevant prosecutorial unit acknowledged the technical errors after objections were raised and is expected to issue corrected documents.
