It has been revealed that the European Parliament continued to pay salary and allowances to former Golden Dawn MEP Ioannis Lagos, even after his conviction and sentencing to 13 years in prison.

According to documents published by the NGO FragDenStaat, Lagos received over €28,900 in allowances and an annual salary of €64,000 for six months following the Greek court’s ruling in October 2020.

Lagos, notorious for tearing a Turkish flag during a European Parliament session, remained free for a period due to his parliamentary immunity and even returned to Brussels with a ticket purchased using EU funds.

European Parliament spokesperson Anastasia Kapodistria stated that MEPs are entitled to payments for their official duties and that the Parliament does not comment on individual cases.

Lagos was eventually extradited to Greece in 2021 and is currently serving his sentence for his role in the criminal organization “Golden Dawn.”
