According to data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), the total number of deaths in Greece, including those caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, dropped by 908 or 0.8% during the first 48 weeks of 2024 (January 1 - December 1) compared to the same period in 2023. The total deaths amounted to 115,995 (58,530 men and 57,465 women) in 2024, down from 116,903 (59,243 men and 57,660 women) in 2023.

Compared to the average number of deaths during the same period between 2018 and 2023 (119,870 deaths), 2024 saw a decrease of 3,875 deaths (3.2%). Annual variations from 2018 to 2023 showed significant fluctuations, including a 9.6% decrease in 2023 compared to 2022.

The most notable reductions in 2024 were recorded during the 7th, 9th, and 8th weeks, with decreases of 18.2%, 13.6%, and 12.9%, respectively. Meanwhile, significant increases occurred in the 24th, 46th, and 32nd weeks, with rises of 15.6%, 15.5%, and 12.8%.

By age group, deaths decreased in 13 groups and increased in 6. The largest reductions occurred in individuals aged 80–84 (677 fewer deaths), 85–89 (659 fewer), and 75–79 (167 fewer). In contrast, increases were observed in those over 90 years old (577 more deaths), 65–69 (131 more), and 70–74 (128 more).

Regionally, 6 of Greece’s 13 regions experienced reductions, with Attica, Thessaly, and the Peloponnese seeing the most significant drops. However, increases were observed in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, the Ionian Islands, and Central Macedonia.
