Tsipras calls for safer sports facilities after death of 16-year-old footballer
Alexis Tsipras has expressed his condolences following the death of a 16-year-old footballer from Kavala who suffered a severe head injury during a match on the island of Thassos, while calling for stronger safety measures at sports facilities.
The young player, Gjana Asllan, known as Ani, was playing for Vyronas Kavala’s reserve team against Aiantas Panagias Prinou on September 27 when he was seriously injured just two minutes into the match. He lost consciousness after striking the back of his head against a structure near the stands and was taken to Kavala General Hospital, where he was treated in intensive care. He died on September 29.
In a statement, Tsipras offered his condolences to the teenager’s parents, family, teammates and friends, saying that the death of a child should prompt questions not only about what happened, but also about what could have been done earlier.
TSIPRAS CALLS FOR STRONGER SPORTS SAFETY MEASURES
Tsipras said Greece needs modern and safe sports infrastructure, particularly at the amateur and local levels where children participate.
He also called for effective inspections of sports facilities rather than checks conducted only “on paper,” as well as adequate medical coverage and functioning emergency response protocols at sporting events.
According to Tsipras, authorities should focus on preventing tragedies rather than responding only after they occur.
“Children should not die while doing what they love,” Tsipras said in his statement, adding that political action should ultimately ensure the safety and lives of children.
INVESTIGATION INTO THE INCIDENT
The teenager’s death has also prompted scrutiny of the conditions at the football ground in Panagia, Thassos.
Local reporting said a preliminary investigation was underway, including examination of the facility’s operating permit and safety measures.
Following the death, the Kavala Football Clubs Association announced the indefinite suspension of its competitions and matches as a mark of mourning and solidarity with the player’s family.
The incident has renewed attention on safety standards in local and amateur football, particularly the proximity of playing areas to walls and other structures and the availability of immediate medical assistance.
