Cruise tourism: Key event held in Kavala with the participation of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace

Focus on local product supply and enhancement of visitor programs

The Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (EMTH), staying true to its commitment to support initiatives that contribute to the promotion and strengthening of the local tourism sector, participated in a major event aboard the Explora 1 cruise ship, operated by MSC & Explora Journeys.

The event was attended by the Deputy Regional Governor of Kavala, Mr. Theodoros Markopoulos, and the Regional Tourism Deputy, Mr. Panagiotis Archontis. During the event, stakeholders presented the opportunities and prospects for cruise tourism in the region. Discussions also focused on strategic cooperation with the Kavala Port Authority (OLK), the Municipality of Kavala, and the Kavala Chamber of Commerce.

Since taking office, Regional Governor Mr. Christodoulos Topsidis and his administration have emphasized the importance of supporting all forms of thematic tourism in EMTH, including cruise tourism. From the outset, the regional authority has supported infrastructure projects outlined by the Kavala Port Authority, as well as promotion initiatives aimed at improving the region’s tourism profile.

Cruise tourism in the region has seen significant growth in recent years. Alongside the increasing number of cruise ships and passengers, the Region of EMTH raised several key points during the event, including:

  • The supply and promotion of local products,
  • The enhancement of visitor programs with tours to iconic sites in Kavala and surrounding cities,
  • Additional actions to strengthen the region’s tourism appeal.

In his remarks, Mr. Markopoulos noted:

"Beyond promoting the tourism offerings of Kavala, the Region of EMTH is the only institution funding infrastructure upgrades at the ‘Apostolos Pavlos’ Port to ensure continuous improvement of services."

Mr. Archontis added:

"The Region is fully committed to supporting thematic tourism, including cruises. With the Destination Management and Marketing Organization (DMMO), we aim to further develop cruise tourism strategically—just as we plan with all other forms of thematic tourism."

This initiative is part of a broader strategic plan by the Region of EMTH to strengthen tourism through cooperation, thematic diversification, and experience-based offerings, with cruise tourism playing a vital role in regional development.
