Eastern Macedonia–Thrace Region expands air links under AIR CONNECT program
The Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (EMT) is expanding its air connectivity as part of its AIR CONNECT program, with new and strengthened international routes set to operate over the next three years, regional officials said on Thursday.
Speaking in Kavala, Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis welcomed the results in air tourism, highlighting a new direct Kavala–Berlin route for the summer season in cooperation with Eurowings, alongside enhanced connections to Düsseldorf and Stuttgart. He also pointed to growth prospects for Dedeağaç (Alexandroupolis) Airport.
The developments were presented during the “AIR CONNECT | East Macedonia & Thrace” working meeting. The region’s Air Service Development Plan, implemented in cooperation with airlines and Fraport Greece, aims to boost international visibility and promote the region in European markets, including routes planned for the 2026 flight schedule.
Officials said AIR CONNECT forms part of a broader strategy for sustainable tourism development, treating air connectivity as a long-term economic and tourism tool rather than a short-term initiative.
The region has adopted a structured, market-driven approach to aviation development, covering both Kavala and Alexandroupolis airports, with a three-year plan for 2026–2028 that includes dedicated funding, co-marketing tools with airlines and continuous evaluation mechanisms.
