More than half of Greeks believe the government ordered the landfilling of the Tempe railway disaster site, according to a poll conducted by ALCO.

The survey, which was aired on Alpha TV, found that 54% of respondents believe the alteration of the accident site – commonly referred to as “landfilling” – was government-ordered, while 30% attribute it to errors.

Additionally, 58% feel the government has failed to understand the message behind rallies marking two years since the Tempe railway disaster, whereas 34% believe the government has acknowledged it.

The poll also shows that 52% of respondents participated in the protests, while 48% did not.

Concerns over rail safety remain high, with nearly seven in 10 citizens expressing fear about train travel. Specifically, 67% said they feel unsafe traveling by train, compared to just 21% who consider it safe.

The mishandling of the accident site has been under intense scrutiny in recent months, with former minister Christos Triantopoulos expected to stand trial over his alleged role.

A recent report by the Hellenic Aviation and Railway Safety Investigation Agency (HARSIA) highlighted severe safety lapses and government mismanagement, revealing that critical evidence was lost due to improper handling of the accident site.
