EU approves Thessaloniki–Bucharest transport corridor
European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas announced that the EU has approved the creation of a new vertical road and rail corridor linking Thessaloniki with Bucharest, with the detailed plan set to be signed on December 4.
Speaking remotely from Brussels at the General Assembly of the Union of Greek Regions, Tzitzikostas said the EU recently adopted changes that strengthen the role of regional authorities. He confirmed that the corridor will begin advancing immediately after the signing, providing both rail and highway connections between Greece and Romania.
“Transport and tourism are major drivers of development,” he noted. “By investing in modern networks, smart mobility, sustainable transport and modern tourism hubs, we are strengthening local economies and creating new opportunities.”
Tzitzikostas said the Thessaloniki–Bucharest axis has been a top priority since taking office. “On December 4, we will sign a detailed plan with strict timelines that will allow construction to begin immediately,” he said.
He emphasized that the project elevates Greece to “a new strategic level,” linking the Aegean Sea with the Black Sea and the Pontus region, while enhancing European security, transport, trade and tourism by connecting Greece to Central Europe.
Additional initiatives on sustainable transport and regional cooperation will be announced soon.
