The changes to be implemented with the law have been announced.

In Germany, a new stage has been passed in the regulation that closely concerns millions of Turkish citizens.

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has signed the "Act on the Modernisation of the Nationality Act", which facilitates dual citizenship.

The law, published in the Official Gazette, will enter into force on 27 June.

Removal of the requirement to renounce Turkish citizenship
The draft law prepared by the German government was adopted by the Bundestag on 19 January with 382 votes against 234 and approved by the Bundesrat on 2 February.

With this law, Turkish citizens living in Germany will be able to acquire German citizenship without renouncing their Turkish citizenship.

What the law brings 8 years to 5 years
The legal residence period required to obtain German citizenship will be reduced from 8 to 5 years.

This period will be reduced to 3 years in cases where the person who wants to acquire German citizenship has school or professional success in adapting to the living conditions in the country, does volunteer work or makes special efforts to learn the language.

The "option model", which forced young people to choose between the citizenship of their parents or German citizenship until the age of 23, will be abolished completely.

Parental detail about born children
Children born in Germany, even if they are not German citizens, will be able to obtain German citizenship if one of their parents has legally resided in the country for at least 5 years.

The person wishing to naturalise as a German citizen must be able to support himself/herself and his/her dependents without social assistance.

Written exams are no longer compulsory
The requirement for a written test for naturalisation for workers who came to the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) until 30 June 1974 and to the former German Democratic Republic (East Germany) until 13 June 1990 as contract workers under the Labour Force Agreement will also be abolished.

Who will not be naturalised
Anyone who commits anti-Semitic, racist, xenophobic, xenophobic or other inhumane acts will be denied German citizenship.

Those seeking German citizenship must recognise the values of a free society as well as Germany's special historical responsibility for the National Socialist regime and its consequences.

In addition, polygamists or those who violate the constitutional equality between men and women will not be naturalised.
