Unemployment falls to 7.4 percent in August
Unemployment rate fell to 7.4% in August, down from 8.8% a year earlier and 7.9% in July, according to data released Wednesday by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).
The figure represents the lowest unemployment rate in 18 years and is just 0.1 percentage points above Greece’s lowest rate ever recorded, according to Labour and Social Security Minister Niki Kerameus.
Fewer people unemployed
The number of unemployed people stood at 350,800 in August, down by 67,181, or 16.1%, compared with August 2025. The figure also fell by 25,656, or 6.8%, from July.
The number of employed people reached 4,410,105, increasing by 85,042, or 2%, compared with August 2025 and by 17,322, or 0.4%, compared with July.
Youth unemployment drops
Unemployment among people aged 15 to 24 fell sharply to 15.6% from 21.8% a year earlier.
For people aged 25 to 74, the unemployment rate declined to 6.9% from 8%.
The rate among women fell to 10.3% from 11.1%, while male unemployment dropped to 4.9% from 6.9%.
Labour force participation
The number of people under 75 who were neither working nor seeking employment stood at 2,943,171 in August.
That was 60,682, or 2%, lower than a year earlier, although it increased by 4,130, or 0.1%, compared with July.
Kerameus said the figures showed continued improvement in the labour market and pledged further targeted measures to reduce unemployment and support employment.
