Greeks are traveling abroad in greater numbers but opting for shorter, closer getaways, according to the latest industry data. The trend reflects a growing preference for European destinations that offer convenience, accessibility, and short flight times.

Data from Athens International Airport show that from January to August, London remained the most popular international destination for Greek travelers, drawing around 145,000 passengers. The British capital’s appeal extends beyond tourism, as many Greeks travel there for business, studies, and professional activities, with a significant number of Greek students attending UK universities.

Larnaca ranked second, attracting 122,000 travelers — a 49% increase compared to the same period last year — underscoring the strong cultural and family ties between Greece and Cyprus. A recent airport survey confirmed that visiting relatives remains the most common reason for travel between the two countries.

Paris placed third with about 100,000 passengers, followed by Istanbul with 90,000, which continues to be a favorite destination for short city breaks.

Other top choices included Milan (87,000), Rome (85,000), and Tirana (82,000) — the only Balkan city in the top ten, reflecting the presence of a large Albanian community in Greece. Vienna (75,000), Budapest (70,000), and Amsterdam (60,000) completed the list.

The data highlight a broader shift in travel habits, with Greeks showing a preference for frequent but shorter trips, particularly to destinations offering a mix of urban culture, shopping, and leisure within a few hours’ flight from Athens.
