Turkish communities in Kosovo and North Macedonia to be presented at European Parliament Intergroup

Turkish communities living in Kosovo and North Macedonia are set to be highlighted at an upcoming session of the European Parliament Intergroup on Traditional Minorities, National Communities and Languages, scheduled for April 30 in Strasbourg.

The event will take place at the European Parliament and is expected to bring increased visibility to the challenges and contributions of these communities within the European framework.

Presentations Backed by Minority Advocacy Groups
The session is being organized with the support of the Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN), specifically its Turkish Minorities/Communities Working Group (TAG).

Two key speakers will deliver presentations:

  • Sevgi Buş Kika, advisor to Kosovo’s Deputy Prime Minister for Minority Affairs, will ներկայաց the Turkish community in Kosovo.
  • Şeval Nuredin, leader of the Turkish Democratic Party (TDP), will present on the Turkish community in North Macedonia.

Focus on Rights, Representation, and Visibility
The session will be chaired by Loránt Vincze, a Member of the European Parliament from Romania affiliated with the European People’s Party (EPP).

Discussions will center on the role of Turkish communities as pillars of multicultural identity and democratic development in their respective countries. Key issues to be addressed include:

  • Language rights
  • Access to education
  • The need for greater visibility within European institutions
  • Broader European Context

The meeting is expected to contribute to raising awareness at the EU level about the status of Turkish minorities in both countries. North Macedonia is currently an EU candidate state, while Kosovo has formally applied for membership.

The Intergroup aims to reinforce the principle that minority rights are an integral part of fundamental human rights and to support the development of European legislation that strengthens minority protection at the national level.
