Serbia to restore compulsory military service after 14 years

Serbia will reintroduce compulsory military service for young men, ending a 14-year suspension, President Aleksandar Vučić announced, citing the need to strengthen national defense amid regional tensions.

Speaking on Pink TV, Vučić said the length of service is still being finalized but is expected to last around 75 days. He described the move as beneficial for society, saying it would instill responsibility and civic duty rather than impose hardship.

Under the plan, men aged 19 to 27 will be required to serve, completing about two months of military training followed by two weeks of field exercises. Women will not be conscripted, though voluntary service will remain available.

The government has allocated €90 million between 2026 and 2028 to reinstate conscription, with the first intake expected in January or March 2026. Around 20,000 men per year will be drafted, beginning with those born in 2006.

Conscientious objectors will be offered civilian service lasting more than 150 days, roughly twice the length of military service.

Mandatory service was abolished in 2011. Authorities say its return is driven by rising regional security concerns, including Croatia’s decision to restore conscription in 2026 and new regional defense alignments. Public opinion polls have consistently shown strong support for the measure.
