Explosives found near Serbia-Hungary gas pipeline, political tensions rise

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said explosives were discovered near a key gas pipeline supplying Hungary, triggering security concerns and an emergency response from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Authorities found backpacks containing explosive devices close to the Balkan Stream pipeline in northern Serbia. Vucic said the devices posed a serious risk to lives and infrastructure, but gave no details on motives.

Orban convened Hungary’s national defence council, calling the pipeline critical infrastructure.

Opposition leader Peter Magyar questioned the incident, suggesting it could be a “false flag” ahead of next week’s closely contested elections.

The discovery comes amid rising political tensions, with Hungary heavily reliant on Russian energy and disputes ongoing over regional pipeline disruptions.
