First local euro coins released in Bulgaria
The Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) has released the first local euro coins, marking an important milestone ahead of Bulgaria’s transition to the European Union’s common currency.
Starting today, citizens can purchase the new euro coins, which feature symbols representing the country’s history and culture. Long lines formed as people queued to obtain the first examples.
Officials emphasized that these coins are not yet in circulation and serve as collectible or demonstration pieces.
Transition to the Euro
Bulgaria’s Parliament approved the adoption of the euro in 2022, with the changeover scheduled for January 1, 2026. From that date, ATMs will dispense euros, and both the leva and euro will be in circulation for one month. From February 1, 2026, only the euro will be used nationwide.
To facilitate a smooth transition, the government has declared December 31, 2025, and January 2, 2026, as public holidays.
