Bulgarian president Rumen Radev announces resignation amid political uncertainty

Bulgarian President Rumen Radev has announced his decision to resign from office, triggering a constitutional transition at the highest level of the state. In accordance with Bulgaria’s constitution, Vice President Iliana Iotova is set to assume the presidency on an interim basis.

Addressing the nation, Radev confirmed that he will formally submit his resignation to the Constitutional Court on Tuesday, ending his second presidential term ahead of schedule. His mandate was originally expected to continue until January 2027.

Constitutional Transition Underway

If the Constitutional Court approves the resignation, Vice President Iliana Iotova will take over presidential duties until the next presidential elections, which are scheduled to take place in November. Under constitutional provisions, the interim presidency will remain in effect until a newly elected head of state is sworn in.

The development comes amid a broader period of political uncertainty in Bulgaria, with analysts closely watching the implications for governance and upcoming elections.

Speculation Over New Political Ambitions

Radev’s resignation has intensified speculation that he plans to establish his own political party and actively participate in the forthcoming parliamentary elections. Such rumors have circulated for months, fueled by the president’s increasingly vocal political positioning and public statements regarding his future ambitions.

First elected president in 2016 and re-elected in 2021, Radev has previously hinted that his political objectives extend beyond the presidency, signaling a possible shift toward a more direct role in party politics.

The unfolding transition is expected to have significant ramifications for Bulgaria’s political landscape in the months ahead.
